A new Vessel Identification System

The Kenya Coast Guard Service (KCGS) has recently introduced a new vessel identification system in collaboration with the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) to enhance security and curb illegal activities along the coast. Public participation programs are underway to educate stakeholders on its implementation.

Additionally, KCGS has issued a warning against fake recruitment ads circulating online, clarifying that all official hiring will be announced through the Public Service Commission and its website (www.kcgs.go.ke).

Operationally, KCGS continues to patrol Kenya’s waters, focusing on illegal fishing, smuggling, and pollution control, with support from its flagship vessel, MV Doria, and the Kenya Navy.

Looking ahead, the agency plans to expand its fleet and surveillance capabilities to bolster maritime security and regional cooperation against cross-border crimes.

The Kenya Coast Guard Service (KCGS) operates multiple stations along Kenya’s coastline and inland waters, each playing a vital role in maritime security and safety.

In Mombasa, the primary base, KCGS conducts patrols to combat illegal fishing, smuggling, and piracy while monitoring port security. The station also leads search and rescue (SAR) missions in the Indian Ocean.

At Lamu, KCGS focuses on counter-terrorism operations and curbing human trafficking, given its proximity to Somalia. The station also protects marine reserves in the Lamu Archipelago.

Lake Victoria (Kisumu Station), KCGS enforces fishing regulations, prevents illegal trade, and conducts SAR operations to reduce boat accidents.

Additionally, KCGS stations engage in community sensitization on maritime laws and environmental conservation. Through these efforts, KCGS ensures the safe, secure, and sustainable use of Kenyan waters.
